Redfish Double-Up

Bill Parker & Steve Goff - Members

Date: May 12, 2012

Bill reports: "Rob, Steve and I met up at the captain's meeting for the Cape Marina Ladies Day tournament Friday night. The day was cancelled due to a sporty forecast, but it didn't stop us from fishing somewhere. The Lagoon was the best choice with some nice protected coves and plenty of them. The plan was to throw UL with jigs while drifting through the flats. First fish of the morning came to Steve with a nice 6lb Trout on 2lb UL (3:1). For the next 4 hours we all caught nice slot Reds with a few Trout and a special bonus to Rob and I, a couple of fat Flounder. A great day on the water with good friends, what else could you ask for."

Miami Tarpon at Night with the Long Rod

Daniel Thompson, Jr.

Date: April 06, 2012

Dad Dan reports: "Daniel and a friend from Titusville who now lives in Boca Raton have been fishing for Tarpon on the full moon for the
past couple of months. Last month they caught 10, including
one that went 100plus pounds. Daniel told me then that he thought he could catch them with the fly rod, using a shrimp imitation I tied up for him years ago. This week, with the full moon over Miami, they caught 7 tarpon, up to 70lbs. Daniel caught 3 with his flyrod, the largest was estimated at 30lbs, but the one in the photo was about 12lbs. He said it was a bit of a challenge chasing the tarpon around the bridge pilings when they ran on his 8-weight flyline! He wants to
use my 12 weight flyrod next time!"

Nice 6-0 Largemouth

Dave Werner - Member

Date: April 05, 2012

Back in north Melbourne, I finally managed to catch a nice Bass before my buddy Ralph got to him. This was our last morning fishing together before he returned up north and we managed eight decent fish in about 2.5 hours before the sun came out and they shut down.

Best Bass day I have ever seen or heard of, period!
Reported by member Dave Werner

I'm using a slightly different format to present the following pictures. If you'll remember at the March club meeting, I gave a 'future' fishing report for some big bass in the next few days. On Tuesday, April 3rd I took my friend Ralph Sivert (visiting from Ohio) down to the Stick Marsh to do some Bass fishing, our last chance to go down there together this year. We fished from my little 14' jonboat. We stopped and purchased one dozen shiners on the way since I wanted our best chance at some bigger fish. Our fishing approach was to drift or slow troll the shiners while casting artificials. Together we caught 18 Bass and one nice Catfish (a typical spring day result) but the sizes of fish he caught were out-of-sight!  Ralph had a phenomenal day as shown in the following photos.

Ralph's catch in chronological order...
9-0 Bass on shiner, 9-8 Bass on plastic worm, 8-0 Bass on shiner, 6-8 Bass on shiner, 5-0 Bass on shiner
that's 38 pounds in just 5 fish!!

9 pound Largemouth                                                                   9 pound 8 ounce Largemouth
You could easily put your entire fist inside these two fish mouths and never touch them

8 pound Largemouth                                                                   6 pound 8 ounce Largemouth (above)

5 pound Largemouth (on left)

If you might be wondering what I was doing while all this transpired, I was simply running the trolling motor and catching ordinary 1.5 to 4 pound fish plus losing a couple between 4 and 5 pounds. Plus, of course, I was kept busy lip landing most of Ralph's fish and dipping another shiner out of the cooler.

The only justice was that Ralph did pay in terms of a sunburn (note the shirt covering the legs as the warm, quiet day progressed).

His top five fish averaged 7.6 pounds in weight, out of sight indeed!

These great fish are all over the reefs and hard bottom off Canaveral in super abundant quantities and large sizes while NOAA/SAFMC keeps the south atlantic ARS fishery completely shut down due to being 'overfished'.

How can it be overfished when nobody can keep one for the last 2+ years?

Spring Turkey

Dan continues: "I left Wednesday night and got to my brother-in-law's farm at midnight. I got up Thursday and went turkey hunting.
I didn't hear any gobbling early, so I just sat on a ridge where I have killed turkeys in years past. I called every now and then, and finally I heard a gobbler respond a long way down in the swamp. It kept coming closer and responding to my calls. After about 20 minutes, I could hear him drumming (when they puff up and strutt, they make a booming sound, but you can only hear it if the turkey is pretty close) and soon saw him coming. When he paused at about 20 yards, I took my shot. He weighed just under 22lbs, had an 11" beard and spurs that were 1 and 1/2" long - one of the oldest turkeys I've ever shot."

Continued next below...

And a Dark Coyote

Dan continues: "Since it was only about 8:15 and the morning was so nice, I picked up the turkey and carried it back to the tree where I had been sitting. I started calling again, and after about 15 minutes, I had two turkeys gobbling to my calls down in the swamp. I didn't want to shoot another one, but I wanted to call them up to me if I could. About 10 minutes later, 3 jakes (year old gobblers with short beards) walked by about 15 feet from me. They wandered off, and 10 more minutes passed before one of the gobblers was responding from about 70 yards out. A few minutes later, I saw a dark shape to my left and thought it was that gobbler - I thought he had come around the ridge. When it moved a bit more, I realized it was a black coyote, probably looking for the hen that was making all the noise (that would be me!). I didn't have my gun in hand, but I reached over and picked it up while the coyote's head was behind a tree, leaned out to where I could get the bead on its head, and shot it. The coyotes have become a nuisance in SC, so any chance to get rid of one is a good thing."

The retention pond was full of Tilapia nests today with many being 'guarded'.  I couldn't resist. Used a small piece of plastic worm dropped repeatedly in the nest until the fish grabbed it to carry it out.  Not much of a fight, they're used to being just a farmed critter I guess.

Rough weather? No sweat. Just slip over to Crane Lake and make a few casts where the strong breezes simply feel good. This four pounder fell for a weightless plastic worm on Thursday afternoon.

How much eyewear does an angler need? Answer is 'too much' following cataract removal :>).  I couldn't even read the scale without removing the sunglasses and donning 'readers'.

Cobia Catch

Dan Thompson - Member (& Gang)

Date: Mar 02, 2012

Dan reports: "Here are a couple photos of Cobia we caught today. We wound up with 7. Four came on jigs, three on pogies. We had a good spurt of activity for about an hour and a half in 60ft of water off PAFB. We had double hookups twice. The Cobia that were in small packs were very aggressive and took the jigs well. I caught the largest one of the day on a jig - weighed 42lbs back at Victor's house on his dinky little scale. Looks about right. It sure felt heavier when I lifted it in the boat after a 20 minute fight. Most of the Cobia
were around 25lbs."

SJR Speck

Jim Russo - Member

Duda canal. There were a lot of shad in the mouth of middle river but I couldn't manage to hook up.
Fast forward to today 2/21. Splashed the gheenoe & ran north, I have never really gotten the opportunity to hit the Shad run, let alone accumulate many FW points, and today was phenomenal!!!! I was able to land 4 shad that were point fish. They were a little shy of halfway between 520 & 528 like Dave got into in his last report. Started off with a lot of mini Bass, then the Shad started boiling all over the bend I was in. I staked out my

"Gheenoe in 2ft of moving water & never left for 3 hrs of non-stop fun. The majority of the fish were in the 3lb range and I did manage to lose two that were easily 4-5lbs due to not having a landing net (note to self). They were boiling thick enough to roll into the side of the boat with a thud, and seemed to really get aggressive when
another boat would pass by. The hot bait for me on fly was a small spider, and an epoxy shrimp fly that really got a work out, along with yellow curly tail jigs and red-white glitter tail jigs. Mixed in with the Shad were Bluegill and the occasional small Redbreast if your jig got near the bottom. The total today for the Shad bite was well over 3 dozen fish. The water is really starting to drop, I never dragged bottom in the Gheenoe, but it's gonna start getting skinny soon out
in the St Johns."

SJR Smorgasbord

Eric Griggs - Member

Eric & Dave Werner hit the St Johns today north of 520. The Shad were pretty scarce, managed 3 and they were only average in size. Did not see many flipping at all so the heavy run there of 6 days ago had dissipated. However, they found other fish willing to hit their small jigs including 4 nice Catfish, a couple of Specks, several Redbreast sunfish, a few Bluegills and a Shellcracker. These fish are a lot of fun on ultra-light gear and sort of saved our day. Also saw an Eagle in a cypress tree, a host of various water birds and of course alligator galore.

3-2 Shad on Spin

Dave Werner - Member

Date: Feb 01, 2012

Finally a 'pointer' Shad this year! Got into a thick run of Shad about 1/2 way between Rt 520 & 528 on Wednesday. I could hear & see them coming minutes before they got to me. Caught fish on all 4 tackle classes (F, U, S, P) I had with me, but only one topped 3#.

Best Shad run this year I've seen (in 5 yrs). The fish are plentiful and the river has a great flow drawing them well to the south. Hoping they last a while yet, need a 3#+ fish now on Fly :>).

Fly Casting for SJR Shad

Dan Thompson - Member

Dan reports: "Shad fishing was off the charts this morning. We caught probably 60 in about 4 hours of fishing. For a while
there it was one after another. I finally put on a tandem rig & caught two with 1 cast (5lbs of shad on 4lb test!). Caught a few with fly, most on UL. We caught a couple dozen early at the mouth of the Econ, then moved a hundred yards inside the Econ' & caught some on a run off the SJR coming into the Econ."

St Johns 'Sunshine Bass'

Dave Werner - Member
Date: Jan 26, 2012

In last October's auction, Dan Pellechio won a Shad trip on the SJR with Dave Werner. So Dan & Dave took Dave's jonboat out upstream from Rt 46 and fished with 1/16 oz jigs and a little with a 4 wght fly rod. Dave nailed this 2-9 hybrid Striper/White Bass right away on 4# UL. Then they started catching several American Shad, Crappies and Bluegills for a nice mixed bag day on the river. They would move and re-anchor when things slowed down. Ended with 10 or so Shad, a few nice 'Gills and a host of Specks (crappies). Dave got a couple of Shad with his little fly rod using a tiny, simple streamer fly.

Dan with a typical Shad a little more than 2 pounds. None today reached the 'point size' at 3 lbs but they all provided great sport on UL, fly and light spin gear.

Pete'e enjoyed the trip as well, often barking at the small jigs we used, just because he could :). He was a very good boat partner.

At one point, there were 5 club members within sight of each other (in 3 boats) in the pool just outside and downstream from the mouth of the Econ'. For a weekday, never ever seen so many boats on the SJR as there were today.

NMZ Seatrout on Fly

Dan Thompson - Member
Date: Jan 20, 2012

Dan reports: "I was invited to fish in the NMZ off the NASA causeway with Bill Alderman this morning. We found a big school of good size redfish about a mile south of the causeway & each caught a couple. The largest was about 42". When we couldn't find the school any more, we moved up on a flat that was loaded with mullet & started catching one slot size redfish after another, with some trout thrown in. I caught a 22" trout on fly. The smaller reds & trout were fun on UL tackle - they hit a small chartreuse jig. I think Bill was catching them on a gold spoon. They were mixed in with the mullet and feeding pretty well."

Points Seatrout

John Durkee - Member
Date: Jan 21, 2012

John reports: "As the new year begins, thought I would join in the fun and begin 'points' fishing. With member Paul Partlow, headed inshore on Saturday afternoon. We didn't find any Reds (the goal) but we caught and released a few trout. Submitting this as my first points fish of 2012 - on 4 lb test with 8 lb leader, jig with small green paddle tail in about 4' of water, fish weighed 3.8lbs on the digital. Photos and safely released."

Bahamas Trip Wahoo

Mark Wilson - Member
Date: Jan 09, 2012

Mark reports: "This past weekend Scott L, Chris H, Frank and myself loaded up and ran across to Walkers Cay targeting some Wahoo. This was to be a quick one night trip and back covering approximately 350 miles in two days. Each day we landed Wahoo on the tide change and when the bite died down we changed gears to bottom fishing, I landed a new FSFA club record 3lb 15 oz Rockhind on Lt General plus a 16 lb 12 oz Red Grouper on 4 lb ultra light tackle. Chris landed a 22 lb Red grouper that warranted IGFA consideration and was submitted. Another fun day in light tackle fishing.

New Club Record YFTuna on Plug

Eric Griggs - Member
Date: Jan 11, 2012

Eric beat his own club record (by a bunch) while on his annual long range fishing trip out of San Diego. This Yellowfin went 27 lbs caught on 15# plug tackle. It took two hours to land it and Eric does look a bit tired. Captain Justin Fleck took the picture.

Congrat's Eric, a great catch!

Days Kingfish Catch

Most of Thurston's Crew
Date: Jan 07, 2012

Bill Parker reports: "I was invited on Curt and Bridget’s boat for a little kingfish yesterday. We heard the kings were non-existent at 8A since the cold water moved out during the week so Pelican was the next best thing on the radar. The fishing was pretty consistent most of the day but not quite as epic as last week-end. We caught a few for the smoke house, then proceeded to do a little catch and release. The fun began with the light tackle which was the best part of the day. I missed the first two on UL then got another shot with a nice 3-1, 12.5lb king. We had several more on UL and SP with only one more to the gaff, unfortunately we went through a few Yozuri’s from the line parting right at the boat. All in all a great day on the water with some good friends. If you guys like king fishing get out there now and catch-em up."

First Sea Trout

Carolyn Costello - Member
Date: Jan 01, 2012

Dad Chris reports: "Here's a couple pictures for you. These are my daughters Elena(4) and Carolyn (3). We went to the Nasa Causeway Bridge yesterday afternoon armed with live shrimp, split shot and bobbers. I had to set the hook for Elena and then give her the rod to wind it in, but my 3 year old actually hooked and fought the fish all by herself, screaming and squealing the whole time. I kept expecting her to throw the rod in the water, but she wound it up right next to the boat.  Giana, my six year old, also got her first Trout, but we didn't get it until after dark, so I don't have a good picture.
Happy New Year!  Chris"
